The history of Ca’ Foscari dates back to 1868 with the founding of the university under the leadership of Francesco Ferrara, the university’s first rector. The palace you stand in today was previously used for private and governmental purposes, and was subsequently turned over to the university upon its founding. The Aula Baratto (opposite this wall of portraits) was first used as a public gallery about commerce.
